Stay-At-Home Coronavirus Pandemic: Week 1
It has been a great week with Addy. I must admit I was fearful at first, but with Mr. Karl’s schedule and materials, we were set to succeed! Thank you Webster for all your creativity, sensitivity and ingenuity. We are blessed.
Addy began her week with one last day in the classroom. Only 7 kids were there, so they enjoyed some intimate time together and helped prep materials for the rest of the classmates. She was honored to play such a significant role in her school’s preparedness efforts!
On Tuesday, Addy was home. We had written out her school schedule the week before, so had time to acclimate to the idea of school at home. With the schedule posted, some school supplies and a whiteboard, we set to work. Addy never pushed back, but instead embraced all the lessons and directions.
- 8:05am Morning Journal
- Morning Meeting (stuffed animals in tow)
- Storytime
- Site Words
- Math (workbook followed by computer lesson)
- Recess
- 11:30am Lunch
- Art/Spanish/Gym
- Reading (workbook followed by computer lesson)
- 2:05pm Closing Circle (stuffed animals still included)
Fridays, the schedule shifts a bit. It is Fun Day Friday, so instead of Reading and Math, we take part in Project Lab. A room is filled with various stations like Legos, play dough, art and craft projects and other team-oriented activities. They’ve even made Apple Butter after their day at the Orchard.
Now that Daddy will be home, he’ll be introducing yoga and some of his own science projects. Ooo, I can’t wait!

for the science experiments!
On Friday, we transformed our kitchen into a spa. DIY lip gloss, bath salts, cucumber water, citrus peppermint foot soak, facials. Daddy even provided a salad lunch! The sun shining through the windows made everything warm, so it felt like we were really in a tropical location (or at least the summer season).
We’d love to share our DIY recipes with you. Simple, easy for kids!
DIY Lip Gloss
Ingredients:
- 4 T coconut oil
- 1 packet Kool Aid
- 1 tsp sugar
- 2 T water
Dissolve Kool Aid mix and sugar in water. Once dissolved, microwave the coconut oil for 10-15 seconds (until softened but no fully melted). Add oil to Kool Aid mix and stir until completely blended. Pour into small lip balm containers. We used small play dough containers and doubled our recipe, making 2 flavors of lip gloss. They are colorful but tart! Better than Lip Smackers!
DIY Bath Salts
Ingredients:
- Small 1/2 pint jar
- Epsom Salts
- Kool-Aid Mix (w/o sugar)
Fill jar with Epsom salts. Then add 1/2 packet Kool Aid and stir. Empty rest of mix in salts and mix until salts take on the color. Our bathroom is now stocked with some lovely salts. I confess, I used Epsom salts already infused with Eucalyptus and Peppermint. Now I am not sure that the Kool Aid won’t make our skin colored. As a kid, I would use it to dye my hair. And after our DIY spa, the kitchen table looked a bit like a pink and purple rainbow.
For our Citrus Peppermint Foot Soak, we started with warm water in large buckets. We have tons of citrus fruit in our house, so there was plenty of variety: Oranges, Limes, Lemons, Grapefruit. Slicing them all, I put a mixture in the warm water and then added 5 drops of these two essential oils: peppermint and tea tree. Finally, we added 1-2 Tablespoons of baking soda. After 20 minutes, our feet were tingly and smooth. Addy raved about how great her feet felt. Next time, I’ll add a loofa for 10 minutes prior to soak.
The cucumber water was simple. We sliced English Cucumbers and added about 10 slices to a glass of flavored bubble water and garnished with metal straws. Refreshing!
Our facials were going to be banana-avocado mash. Running out of time, we used Kirkland’s Facial wipes instead.
It was a lovely Project Lab. And I am hoping to utilize some of our materials for Addy’s 7th Birthday Party in November. Addy would like to go to a real spa, so negotiations will begin next week!
